Lake Ohrid is one of Europe’s deepest and oldest lakes, preserving a unique aquatic ecosystem that is of worldwide importance, with more than 200 endemic species, which is why the lake is called the “museum of living fossils”. The clear water is the result of numerous underground and several surface sources. There are beaches on the Lake Ohrid shore with an area of 82,2 ha and capacity for 50.000 visitors. Most of the beaches are on eastern shore, and the others are on the northern one. Most of the beaches are privately owned. Ohrid trout is the most recognized resident of the lake, and also Belvica from whose scales is made the emulsion for coating Ohrid pearls. The Ohrid Pearl is one of the trademarks of Ohrid. Its surface shines with all the colors of rainbow. The production of Ohrid pearls is a family secret tradition passed down from one generation to another.
